Locum tenens is taken from a Latin phrase meaning “to hold the place of.” Most commonly referring to temporary physicians, locum tenens doctors contract with recruitment agencies to perform medical services for a healthcare organization over a certain period of time. The physician works as an independent contractor paid through the staffing agency, which is in turn paid by the healthcare facility. These professionals are still governed by their respective regulatory bodies, despite the transient nature of their positions.

We contract with facilities and obtain a complete job description of what you can expect when you walk through the doors of your locum assignment. These assignments vary in length due to their staffing needs. They vary in length offering part time or full time hours to cover facilities for vacation, maternity coverage, staffing shortages or on an as  needed basis.

Our credentialing department offers expedited credentialing services. You will be credentialed with Lotus for a period of two years. We will prefill all facility applications, work closely with medical staff offices to ensure you start on time, and confirm your privileges stay active.

What is the placement process for a Locum Tenen?

The first step is speaking with one of our recruiters to discuss your clinical skills, preferences, and availability. Once you share a copy of your updated CV, your recruiter will contact you with locum positions that meet your requirements. With your consent, your recruiter will get you in touch with clients you are interested in connecting with. When there is a mutual agreement to proceed with the locum coverage, you will be sent a confirmation letter recapping the details of the assignment: compensation, dates, and travel and lodging arrangements.

We then assist you through the credentialing process with Lotus and the facility to complete all paperwork required. The placement process may vary in length. Depending on the position’s urgency, credentialing can take from 2 days to 3 months. We work directly with the Medical Staff Offices to ensure your file is complete by your start date.
